Managing Service Expectations in Online Markets: A Signaling Theory of E-tailer Pricing and Empirical Tests ¬リニ
نویسنده
چکیده
Expectations play a significant role in determining customer perceptions and satisfaction. Accordingly, retailers seek to manage customers’ service expectations. However, the tangible signals of service quality that are available to brick-and-mortar retailers (such as location, store appearance, and salespersons’ behavior) may not be available in online markets. Using a signaling model, we obtain conditions when Internet retailers (e-tailers) use price to manage their customers’ service expectations. In contrast to extant theory, we find that it is possible for either low or high service e-tailers to use price in signaling their service levels. Further, we develop an appropriate deductive test of our theory based on price-ending patterns as an artifact of the signaling process. Based on this test, we find compelling evidence that e-tailers indeed manage service expectations using price. Interestingly, we also find preliminary evidence that suggests customers implicitly associate price-ending patterns with a retailer’s expected service level. We discuss several other implications of our findings for researchers and managers. (Expectations, Internet marketing, Pricing, Price-ending, Signaling, Separating and Pooling Equilibrium, Retailing)

Can Price Dispersion in Online Markets be Explained by Differences in e-Tailer Service Quality?
It has been hypothesized that the online medium and the Internet lower search costs and that electronic markets are more competitive than conventional markets. This suggests that price dispersion--the distribution of prices of an item indicated by measures such as range and standard deviation—of an item with the same measured characteristics across sellers of the item at a given point in time f...
متن کاملAsymmetric Pricing across Channels
Among all the topics about price dispersion, asymmetric price dispersion between online and o¤-line channels and asymmetric pricing across traditional retailers, e-tailers, and multichannel retailers have received the most extensive empirical examination in the literature. However, in many cases, these studies generate contradictory results. This paper jointly models traditional retailer, e-tai...

Reactive power management plays an essential role in the secure operation of the power system as an ancillary service. Although in electricity markets, the particular attention is paid to active power, the reactive power also plays an important on total generation costs of electricity. On the other hand, as it is mainly confined to local consumption, to avoid market power and maintain the se...
متن کاملResearch Note - Online Price Dispersion: A Game-Theoretic Perspective and Empirical Evidence
T existence and persistence of price dispersion for identical products in online markets have been welldocumented in the literature. Possible explanations of this price dispersion, derived mainly using hedonic price models, have seen only modest success. In this paper, we propose a competitive model based on online retailers’ differentiation mainly in service provided and recognition enjoyed to...
متن کاملOwnership, location and prices in chinese electronic commerce markets
This study examines the pricing behavior of online retailers (e-tailers) in Chinese e-commerce markets. Descriptive statistics indicate that prices have not converged in China’s e-commerce markets and that there is relatively more price variation in markets for cosmetics, compact discs, gifts and books. Fixed effects model estimates show that e-tailer’s characteristics are significant determina...
